The Port of Næstved is good business for Næstved

The Port Board at the Port of Næstved has been reluctant to react to the municipality's study of the future of the port, which was carried out by COWI. The reason is that the Port Board believes that the customer and market analysis is crucial for the further positioning of the port's future. In December 2022, EY-Parthenon wrote in their memo that not enough studies have been carried out to be able to comment on the business basis for a port. In their memo to the municipality, they described how the study should be carried out. The port board has asked EY-Parthenon to carry out this study and now the result is available.
It is important for the business community in Næstved that there is a port
One of the main conclusions of the EY-Parthenon report is that the presence of the port in Næstved is crucial for the location of the glass cluster in Næstved. It would lead to very large increases in Reiling's and Ardagh's transportation costs if they had to use other ports.
Other companies point out that Næstved's location so far in Zealand makes it attractive to bring goods into Næstved, as it provides good access to the Zealand market.
Both in the EU and nationally, the ambition is that transport must increasingly be shifted from trucks to trains and sea transport to support the green transition.
The port's customers indicate a need for more space for storage and for processing cargo.
EY Parthenon's report states:
- That the Port of Næstved has had growth in cargo volume since 2016 of 4% per year on average.
- That the Port of Næstved directly supports more than 630 jobs in Næstved Municipality, which relate to jobs within the port's area of activity and from the port's customers - in addition, the port's activities support approximately 510 indirect jobs in Denmark as a result of derived effects.
- Several current customers want additional land to support future growth.
- That new potential customers also want space in the port.
- That several major market trends are relevant and can create opportunities for the Port of Næstved.
The Port Board notes that - That it is important for Næstved to have a port to retain and attract jobs.
- That the port has a significant role to play in the green transition of the transport sector.
- That the port's current and potential customers demand areas that create opportunities for the growth of their businesses.
On the basis of the EY-Parthenon report, the Port Council notes that there is no longer any doubt that there
should be a port in Næstved.
The full report has been submitted to the City Council. It is confidential as it contains information on the future plans of
customers.
