Shipbreaking in third countries

March 24, 2015

Short consultation period on ship dismantling lacks certainty of economic impact on the maritime industry Danish Ports supports the consultation response from the Danish Shipowners' Association. Danish Ports also welcomes the Hong Kong Convention, which aims to ensure that ship dismantling takes place at certified dismantling facilities. The latter is to ensure that the working environment is in order and that hazardous materials are handled in an environmentally sound manner. It is regrettable that not a single country has ratified the convention, but the EU can take the lead by ratifying the adopted convention without further tightening. Danish Ports understand the desire for the EU to push for ratification, but finds it essential to ensure through solid analysis that the proposal does not have economic and administrative consequences for the maritime industry or contradict the EU's maritime transport policy or the EU's White Paper on Transport, both of which focus on increased maritime growth and relief of the road network in favor of maritime transport.
