Changed rules for securing port facilities

August 7, 2013

Rules for securing port facilities are relaxed

ISPS-registered cargo ships and passenger ferries in predominantly domestic trade have had relaxed requirements for ship security since March 2013.

The change from the Coastal Authority means that the relaxed rules now also apply to the ferry companies and port facilities that serve the cargo and passenger ships in question.

The change is a step towards a more common-sense approach to activity and cargo security. It is Port Denmark's wish that requirements for securing ports and port facilities take into account the specific likelihood of terrorist acts in the port in question in relation to the port's activity, size and geography (location and cargo routes). Danish Ports assess that the new rules will also have an impact on the requirements for port security, as parts and wholes of the port's threat picture will change as a result of the executive order on better security of ships in domestic traffic. With the change, ports will have an extended time to submit a renewed security plan for port facilities. It is positive that ports will have an extended submission time from 6 to 9 weeks after an approved vulnerability assessment.
