Weight and dimensions for trucks
Common rules for container transport should create incentives for short sea shipping and prevent overloading of containers The Commission's proposal is first and foremost an adaptation of EU rules to market standards. 45-foot shipping containers have become a market standard for intercontinental freight transport and should therefore not be considered as special transport with special dispensation for road transport. Danish Ports welcomes the focus on common EU rules on control of overloading and it is important that the responsibility for overloading is imposed on everyone who may be responsible for e.g. the actual weight of a container. In Danish Ports' view, intermodal transport is a key word in the proposal. Short sea shipping is in fierce competition with land transport. There should be significant assurance that the proposal will not upset the very delicate balance that exists between the modes of transport.
