New emission requirements for ships
New requirements for ships can lead to bans on calls The European Commission is proposing new legislation to implement the IMO's proposal for a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport.
Among other things, the proposal requires Denmark to set national sanctions for vessels that do not comply with the new greenhouse gas requirements. Among other things, deny ships entry into Danish ports.
Danish commercial ports are open ports with an obligation to receive ships. Ports do not have the responsibility and/or ability to see whether ships in the port comply with the proposed monitoring and reporting requirements for the greenhouse gas emissions of the vessel calling at the port. It is the authorities' task to stop ships in Danish waters if they do not comply with applicable legislation.
