No special European rules for ship recycling

April 15th, 2013
Danish ports are not tax collectors - Danish Ports say no to new proposal In connection with the European Commission's proposal for a European ratification of the UN's 2009 Hong Kong Convention on Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling, the European Parliament has expanded the proposal with additional measures. The proposal is not well thought out. The Parliament's own impact assessment shows tax increases in ports of up to 167%, which is not estimated to affect trade. The proposal distorts maritime competitiveness and will mean that heavy goods will increasingly move from sea to road. It will mean that the role of tax collector will be imposed and will give ports a heavy administrative burden. In connection with the debate in the Parliament, Danish Ports has been in contact with members of the European Parliament to highlight the consequences for Danish commercial ports. The next step in the matter will be a negotiation between the Council and the Parliament. When a joint draft is ready, it will be dealt with in a first reading in the plenary session of the Parliament, probably in June 2013.
