DK consultation: Reduction of tax on shore power

March 6th, 2014

Shore power is a technology in its infancy and should not be subject to legislation A new Danish bill from the Ministry of Taxation proposes a reduction in electricity tax so that cruise ships and other large commercial ships in ports can consume electricity directly from land (shore power), which is subject to a reduced electricity tax of 0.4 øre per kWh. Shore power consumption by ships provides environmental benefits. Therefore, the proposal should also provide wider opportunities for e.g. island ferries and smaller supply ships. Danish Ports finds it important to emphasize that shore power is, after all, just one option out of many alternatives to transition the sector to more sustainable maritime transport.
