Which form of contracting should you choose?
Construction work can be carried out in different types of contracts. In a turnkey contract, the contractor is responsible for the overall construction project, including technical advice, while in a specialist contract, the client (the port) has hired an independent technical advisor, and the client has a direct contractual relationship with each individual specialist contractor. It places greater demands on the client to carry out a construction project in a specialist contract than in a turnkey contract, but it will generally be more expensive to carry out a construction project in a turnkey contract than in a specialist contract. There are various intermediate forms, including the main contract, where several trades are combined under one contractor. It is not possible to give a brief and comprehensive account of the various forms of construction organization or to set general criteria for which form of contract is the most suitable.
