Danish ports visit the port of Ghent, Zeeland Seaports and Zeebrugge On Tuesday, 11 November 2014, the Danish Ports Association will pay a working visit to the port of Ghent and Zeeland Seaports. They will visit Zeebrugge the following day. The Danish Ports are coming to find inspiration in order to promote the reciprocal trade. The Danish Ports Association, located in Copenhagen, comprises no less than 68 ports in Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Situated in the area between the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic States, they generate a combined 80% of the Danish foreign trade. This immediately demonstrates the importance of the Danish ports. Sweden, no. 1 trading partner for GhentConversely, the region of Scandinavia and the Baltic States is of great importance for the port of Ghent. Sweden has been the most important trade partner for the port of Ghent for the past three years thanks to the ro/ro traffic (3 million tonnes in 2013). There is an almost daily ro/ro traffic between Ghent and Gothenburg (Sweden) and weekly with Brevik (Norway). In Ghent, 17 CEOs from Danish ports are getting to know the infrastructural and commercial developments of the port, the new form of port management in partnership with the City of Ghent, and in the future with Evergem, Zelzate and the province of East Flanders, Ghent as multimodal port at the transport crossroads of Europe, and the relationship between port and industry. Of course, the cooperation with Zeeland Seaports is also included on the agenda. Danish and Swedish inspiration for Ghent and Zeeland SeaportsThe Danish-Swedish port Copenhagen-Malmö received a visit from both the port of Ghent and Zeeland Seaports at the end of August 2014, accompanied by the Association of Danish Ports. The approach was to look at how both ports have set up a cooperation in a single cross-border economic zone. The Ghent-Terneuzen Canal Zone is also an example of a cross-border economic area. Both ports have worked together operationally for some time, for example in relation to the joint management of the lock planning in Terneuzen and, starting at the beginning of next year, in relation to the use of a single port information system for the ships that call in at the Canal Zone. Zeeland Seaports The party will take the port yacht Jacob Van Artevelde from Ghent to the Zeeland Seaports. In Terneuzen, the Zeeland Seaports port company will be visited, where, among other things, the position and the development of the Zeelandic port will be discussed. After this, a visit will be paid to the Verbrugge Terminals company in East Vlissingen. ZeebruggeOne day later, on Wednesday, 12 November, the Danish ports will visit the port of Zeebrugge. The Zeebrugge port already has good relations with the Danish port of Esbjerg. In 2007, both ports signed a “sister port agreement” to exchange collective know-how and contacts and to develop a commercial strategy. This will increase the visibility of both ports in the respective regions. This strategic cooperation resulted in 2008 with the initiation of Cobelfret’s successful ro/ro connection between both ports. The Zeebrugge port management also wants to introduce the Danish Association to Zeebrugge as a business and transport centre, with special attention to the strategic cooperation for logistics clusters.
